Julian began his career as a professional computer graphics artist and 3D animator, primarily for demonstrative evidence used in court trials. He then spent many years working in design and marketing for technology/science companies, engineering firms, and design studios. His love for electronic music inspired him to launch his media and publishing firm, Keyframe-Entertainment. Keyframe released music on its label, managed artists, sponsored music festivals, published films and books, and directed crowdfunding/marketing campaigns.
Julian’s event management experience includes organizing hundreds of global film screenings, presenting at festivals, creating music events, and hosting after-parties for XR conferences.
In 2018, Julian expanded his services to offer VR development and consultation. He trained in Unity3D, was an early participant in the Oculus Launch Pad program, and is part of the AltSpaceVR and Facebook Horizon (Beta) communities. Below is a list of VR projects not under NDA:
- Project (Contest): Finalist for the MarsCity Design BoreDome VR fly-through
Description: Mars City Design is an innovation platform dedicated to creating the best blueprints of future cities on Mars, creating technologies to give impactful sustainable solutions applicable for earth. Simulation of living on Mars.
Responsibility: Julian created all of the models in Maya and Unity 3D and created animations, particle systems for the water in vertical farm pod, and fly-through in Unity3D.
Platform: Unity3D & Maya - Project (Internal): An EDM Chronology: Interactive VR Experience
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/10IzeDMufN_JAzGDGw-us2aLc4xOtZZILjDnwwLMkF4g/edit#slide=id.gd4400e736_2_0Description: This unique learning experience teaches users the different styles of EDM and will eventually invite users to create + share their own music playlist in VR.
Responsibility: Julian created all of the models and attached textures in Unity3D.
Platform: Unity3D & Maya - Project (Internal): Interactive VR Music Visualizer:
Description: This VR experience is coded in a way that allows for audio manipulation through the mixer channel knobs, which in turn alter the visual special effects in the environment. These visual effects are affected with the movement of the knobs, with synchronization of the music. Utilizing stock audio visualization effects from Unity, the user is able to control both the intensity of the sounds and the visuals. There is also a feature where the music studio walls fade away, and the user is immersed in a visual effects environment.
Responsibility: Coding of the slider was created by the TA’s of the class. Julian created the concept and purchased models from the Unity store.
Platform: Unity3D & Maya - Project (Final training project): Save Christmas VR experience
Description: Alongside project parner Mika, the team created a VR experience where the user sorts through Christmas gifts that are tossed into a floating wreath. The wreath captures the score, generates a “success” or “failure” sound depending on if the toy goes into the correct wreath. Toys fall into two categories: Toys that need to go into a box, and boxes that need to be wrapped. There is also a timer next to the scoreboard that lets the user know when the game will elapse. This experience can also be modified into practical applications, such a sorting game, exercise for the elderly, or a counting game for kids. This was a final project for the Unity Development VR class.
Responsibility: Julian created the presents in Unity using primitives.
Platform: Unity3D - Project (Internship): VR project created for The Department of Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes at Stanford
Description: VR project to teach children how their diabetic device works and prepares them for real-world usage if alarm goes off in class.
Team: Scott Kravitz (animation, interaction, VR dev), Effy Zhang (interaction, UI, VR dev).
Responsibility: Julian Reyes (research, art direction), asset curation, admin, and advisory.
Platform: Unity3D - Project (Internal): Keyframe AltspaceVR Unity3D Gallery Import
Description: A full scale contemporary art gallery 3D model was purchased in the Unity store, optimized in Unity3D and imported into AltspaceVR. This test was an experiment of realistic environment setup.
Responsibility: Julian imported the 3D model from the Unity Store.
Platform: Unity3D & AltspaceVR - Project (R&D): Facebook Horizon (Beta) build of Chess at Mirabeau Park
Description: This group effort recreates the Mirabeau park in Washington and includes a full size playable chess game. The chess pieces interact and the board knows to extract captured pieces and neatly organize them outside of the game play area.
Responsibility: Julian created all of the 3D models and landscaping, and also helped with interaction strategy. The rest of the team worked on the development/coding/layout.
Platform: Facebook Horizon (Beta) - Project (R&D): Facebook Horizon mini-nightclub
Description: Julian was asked to create a mini-nightclub inside an existing game within Facebook Horizon. The modeling and lighting was all created within the Beta editing environment.
Responsibility: 3D modeling.
Platform: Facebook Horizon (Beta) - Damanhur VR Experience. Available in the Oculus Store
https://www.oculus.com/experiences/gear-vr/1615872558477968/?locale=en_USDescription: Keyframe Executive Produced Fifer Garbesi’s “Laboratory for the Future of Humankind: Con Te Damanhur”. The experience offers a rare glimpse into this ecovillage/spiritual community situated in the Piedmont region of northern Italy.
Responsibility: Julian financed and advised on the project.
Platform: 360 Video - Event Production: VR events, conference after-parties, and more
